What did you like most about this instructor and course?

  1. This course challenged me to view visual work in a newer, more complex way. As usual, Derek's class was organized well, and he led us through the semester flawlessly. His intelligence about and insight into the topics he teaches and discusses never cease to amaze me.
  2. Pleasant demeanor. Love for subject. Open and honest. Invites critique.
  3. I really liked the weekly changeup for assignments with the stenope set, also really enjoyed the texts we read.
  4. I like how thoughtful Derek was in planning the course. It was the perfect combination of guided assignments and being able to choose some of our own project/content.
  5. Stenope set; flexibility and invited creativity for final project; opportunity to do authentic peer review for posters/projects; time recommendations for readings.
  6. The projects were clearly defined at the beginning of the course. The class was organized and engaging.
  7. I like that we explored a broad range of visual rhetoric topics. Derek was engaging, thoughtful, and treated the class as peers with valuable input. Best class in the WRTG program!
  8. He is well prepared for class and accessible outside the classroom.
  9. I thought the readings were interesting and diverse.
  10. Dere is extremely organized and engaging. Examples are relevant and current. His organization allowed me to prepare well in his course.
  11. I liked that the stenope were split amongst students each class period. It would have been too much to do them all for each reading.
  12. Syllabus and Unflattening.
  13. The current theory/practice balance with key course anchor texts, the two tiered project set-ups, and the level of discussion held.

What did you dislike most about this instructor and course?

  2. Hoped for more practical professional work and discussion that waded into industry expectations.
  3. Nothing!
  4. I didn't dislike anything.
  5. I didn't love Drucker's Graphesis.

  8. None! He is a great human being. Replied to all of my emails with detailed helpful instruction.
  9. I wish there was more time for us to learn what visual rhetoric scholars are teaching at other institutions.

  12. Nothing.
  13. I tripped up some with the stop write/draws, but that's part of the point.

What constructive suggestions do you have for this instructor or course?

  1. I struggled with this question. While I want to provide you with constructive criticism, I'm not sure how. The course was even-paced, well thought out, and geared toward our shared understanding of the course material. I specifically enjoyed the creation of my stenope set and plan to refer back to our course blog often. I'm sorry, Derek. I tried really hard here and the only thing I've come up with is perhaps more time in the class. A few times, we didn't quite get to all of the reading questions in a way I know you would have preferred.
  2. Make use of some standard software. Though price is obvious issue. Excel may be something to take advantage of. Or some use of data in presentation form. Overall loved the class.
  3. For the poster project I think we would have benefitted from feedback on our drafts from you. Also how to do design work--more time on that would be helpful.
  4. Keep teaching this class this way! I loved it.
  5. n/a
  6. Keep up the great work!
  7. ---
  8. None! He is a caring, knowledgeable professor!
  9. In the future, I think we should utilize the blog more like the day we had to comment on each other's. Maybe the class could be a hybrid.
  10. Do you have to use Canvas? I liked using your website for everything! I can understand using it for assignment submissions, but I wonder if the Google Drive folder can serve that purpose. It is time stamped.

  12. I can't think of anything.
