Comments

What did you like most about this instructor and course?

  1. That he's Derek, i.e., super helpful, willing to let students try out new ideas and gives constructive feedback.
  2. 1. Assignments, readings, and projects all relate directly to course goals. 2. Freedom for individual design and direction in assignments.
  3. Derek is both relatable and reasonable. Although assignment expectations are broad and abstract at first, he really guides the student in cultivating a vision.
  4. Active discussions in class.
  5. I like the overall organization of the class so I could focus and be prepared each meeting.
  6. Designing graphics for our visual strategy. I wish there were more opportunities or prompts for us to do work on a more weekly basis.
  7. The infographics textbook and the teaching that accompanied it.
  8. I got more opportunities to play with designs than I had ever before.
  9. I greatly appreciate that he took into consideration of the fact that I have no background in rhetoric.

What did you dislike most about this instructor and course?

  1. The course is delicately balanced between graphic design and rhetoric--and I guess that made it confusing at times.
  2. I'd like to see deeper, more nuanced class discussion--not sure what to suggest. Perhaps...
  3. Not a thing.
  4. Many of the expectations for assignments were left very vague. Taking the course without a background in rhetoric before made this course perhaps more of a struggle than is helpful.
  5. ---
  6. Too few projects and missing chapter felt tedious.
  7. The lack of software used in association with the infographics part.
  8. I wasn't always sure exactly what I was supposed to be doing for assignments.
  9. It would have been nice to get some instruction on rhetoric.

What constructive suggestions do you have for this instructor or course?

  1. ---
  2. ...more theory-based readings early in the term. Ditch the WSINYE; Front load assignments and projects.
  3. None.
  4. ---
  5. I would have liked to have more readings that explicitly dealt with rhetorical terms and how they relate to information design. I felt like having more authors that are not directly involved in the rhetorical side of design made it hard to draw more comparisons. That said the reading we did have challenged me to make those connections.
  6. Make us do more work. Push students harder with making their own designs. It will help us in the long run.
  7. Incorporate some software with the infographics part of the class.
  8. Make your assignment sheets on the syllabus a bit more clear.
  9. Teach some rhetoric in the beginning.

  9. I was extremely nervous about taking this class. It was a risk for me but I am glad I took the risk. I've developed useful skills for the job market I am looking into. Thank you.
