Comments

What did you like most about this instructor and course?

  1. Discussing theory and also trying out some of the tools we were discussing.
  2. I really enjoyed all the new types of technological activities I can incorporate in my classroom.
  3. content delivered
  4. The practical applications
  5. Very relaxed environment, but also stimulating discussions.
  6. Exposure to various scholars and digital technology.
  7. I wasn't expecting the comfort level with technology that was provided. No reason to worry about intimidation.
  8. Learning new and different technologies.
  9. I was stimulated to think more about how to integrate technology into my teaching. I was also interested in learning about the various online programs/tools. The variety is overwhelming.
  10. ---
  11. Instructor is extremely knowledgeable and insightful. Class time is very well spent in theoretical discussion and hands-on activities.
  12. Derek is very knowledgable about this subject.
  13. Extremely intellectual and challenging course--the most demanding class I've taken in the program (a good thing). Derek also expects a lot from us intellectually, which shows he respects us as thinkers and teachers.

What did you dislike most about this instructor and course?

  1. Sometimes we ran out of time when trying new tools, but I'm not sure that's avoidable. It was still helpful to practice with the tools.
  2. I did not care for the Selber reading. I think there could have been a more useful text.

  8. Everything was graded after midterm, so it was hard to know where I stood for most of the class.
  9. I really would have liked more examples/samples of assignments. I felt sometimes like I didn't know what was expected.
  10. ---
  11. ---
  12. The energy of the classroom (environment created by and between students and instructor).
  13. In hindsight, some of the reading I needed contextualized more--so much of it was unfamiliar that it was often difficult for me to find "anchors" to help.

What constructive suggestions do you have for this instructor or course?

  1. It would be interesting to try Wysocki's "Mapping Reading" activity at the end.
  2. ---
  3. perhaps more time in practice, less in discussion
  4. More guidance about assignments
  5. ---
  6. It would be nice to have more computer time.
  7. I would like to see a section devoted to teaching online courses.
  8. More time with the different technologies.
  9. See above comment. I really did enjoy Derek's sense of humor and availability via email.
  10. ---
  11. More feedback sooner. Students (several) were uneasy to not have any grades/feedback on anything before April 10.
  12. Responding more directly and immediately to students' reluctance to embrace technology or whose feelings about the course determined the environment in general.
  13. Perhaps more talking/discussion among students--although at times we needed redirected or benefitted from Derek's insight.

  10. What I think you do well, Derek, is articulate a stance without imposing a stance. In fact, I wanted more of this. I think you do a well enough job of hedging and explaining that your stance on a given topic is just that: your own. I think you do a good job of keeping the floor open to offer perspectives and even articulating perspectives other than your own, and in our fairly quiet class I wanted more. Many thanks for a great class.
