Comments

What did you like most about this instructor and course?

  1. He always helps when I have issues with technology and he responds to my emails in a timely manner.
  2. I could not say enough good things about Professor Mueller. He is an excellent example of a professor who stimulates students academically.
  3. Interesting assignments that step outside of the box and allo aspects of creative writing in formal assignments.
  4. Comment (April 2011)

The course is set up to re-examine what we mean by "formal" and "creative." That is, these references align with differing views of rhetorical style in academic contexts. In ENGL328 we try to notice how these operate and what they prohibit and also make available to writers.-DM

  5. I loved project one, it really helped me to jump in with both feet!
  6. -
  7. Approaching the material from multiple angles was extremely beneficial. The projects' use of many different mediumsnot only allows for great "hands-on" learning opportunities, but by tapping into different learning style, was far more impactful method of teaching than monotonous lectures, papers, and exams. Will recommend this class and Derek to others.
  8. Derek is without any doubt the most prepared man I've ever met.
  9. He always would stress to come and see him for any help with the course, and was very helpful.
  10. -
  11. Accessibility. He's challenging, and he makes me question forms in writing.
  12. I liked how the course was creative and stimulating.
  13. -
  14. Unique assignments, interesting syllabus/subject matter
  15. -
  16. Attitude toward subject and students.
  17. I liked his open-mindedness about assignments and willingness to include our ideas when planning them.
  18. I think that Derek has found a great way to interest the students in the material which is sometimes hard to do.

What did you dislike most about this instructor and course?

  1. Not enough snacks.
  2. Nothing. A+
  3. -
  4. Some of the reading is very dull.
  5. -
  6. -
  7. The complexity of some of the readings.
  8. Some of the instructions for the project were confusing on what we had to do.
  9. -
  10. I feel like the assignments could be more clear.
  11. Comment (April 2011)

This comes up periodically, and, as with all assignments, we try to strike a balance between too much direction and too little. I don't want the assignments to overdetermine the work students do, but in certain cases the assignments are elaborate because they have over time responded to questions students raise. -DM

  12. I disliked the fact that projects got confusing.
  13. -
  14. Short papers were not effective; hard to sum up response in a page.
  15. -
  16. Sometimes correspondance comes across as condescending.
  17. The policy of attendance. If a student carries a good grade and participates in class absences, aslong as not accessive, shouldn't matter
  18. Nothing.

What constructive suggestions do you have for this instructor or course?

  1. Have more days in class spent on reviewing and working on projects if possible.
  2. Keep using the feedback in the dropbox. It was very beneficial and precise. The audio feedback was particularly interesting and useful.
  3. More constraints in projects.
  4. Provide more examples of Project 3, with regards to the specific three paragraph passage, as well as with the remakes.
  5. -
  6. More projects, please!
  7. Rework project 3.
  8. More days for in class work.
  9. -
  10. Keep up the good work.
  11. For P3 I would suggest a better explanation of the goals and instructions.
  12. -
  13. More effective assignments than short papers.
  14. Comment (April 2011)

The course includes five short papers, which are basically exercises in summary and response. That is, these are fairly conventional short papers that emphasize developing a relationship to the reading by writing while reading. -DM

  15. -
  16. None.
  17. Have the poster assignment individually, not by group.
  18. Nothing.

  15. This was my favorite class this semester. You balanced professionalism and academic advancement in the course with casual qualities perfectly.

  17. I signed up for this class dreading it and it ended up being my favorite class. Derek is able to engage the students in discussions that aid in learning the information instead of just lecturing. The projects we did in class gave everyone enough space that they can shine in their own way and prove they know the material at the same time.
